Kabini:

Comprising of the south-eastern part of Nagarhole National Park and situated on the banks of the Kabini River, the forests of Kabini are among the most popular wildlife destinations of Karnataka and indeed in India. The reason? The green landscape, the serene backwaters, great accessibility from Bengaluru and Mysore and the brilliant sightings of a wealth of wildlife.

Spread over 55 acres (22 ha) of mixed deciduous forests, bamboo steep valleys, and water bodies, these were the hunting grounds for royalty and British officers but today this is a protected paradise.

The park has an astonishing abundance of wildlife including large mammals such as tiger, leopard, Asian elephant, Dhole (Indian wild dog), and Gaur (Indian bison) apart from spotted and sambar deer, stripe-necked mongoose, Hanuman langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, smooth-coated otters among a diversity of other wildlife. Wildlife moves boldly as well, and Kabini has a history of being among the best places in India to spot the reclusive leopards, now complemented by the increasing tiger population. As an added bonus, a single black panther is also currently roaming Kabini’s tourism zones and a lucky encounter is certainly on the cards.

Over 250 species of birds have also been recorded in the park, some key species to look out for include the Malabar pied hornbill, grey-headed fish eagle, white-bellied woodpecker, vernal hanging parrot and the rarely seen and exceptionally beautiful Malabar trogon.

The park can be explored largely through two safaris: the jeep and the boat. The jeep safaris are an immersive tracking affair targeted towards sighting megafauna such as the elephants and big cats while the boat safaris offer a great way to get close to the more aquatic of the park’s wildlife including birds such as river terns & spoonbills, mugger crocodiles, otters and even some lucky sightings of the big cats when they come to the reservoir for a drink.

Yes, visiting tiger reserves is quite safe. However, especially when exploring a wilderness on foot, we should take necessary precautions as this is the wild. Our skippers are always on hand to guide you for the same, and we believe there should be no hindrance to you enjoying your time in the wilderness.

Can you arrange for a camera as well along with the binoculars?
